Dentures have a long history, dating back to ancient civilizations where various materials were used to replace missing teeth, we can only assume the reason was most likely practical for chewing and biting and no doubt, due the materials used, were probably only made for the wealthiest ‘smilers’. The earliest dentures were made from ivory, bone, and even human teeth. In the 18th century, famous figures like George Washington were believed to wear dentures made from a combination of ivory, gold, and lead, though many myths suggest they were made from wood. While this is not true, Washington’s dentures were certainly a product of the best dental technology available at the time. Over the centuries, denture materials have evolved, with modern dentures being made from acrylic, porcelain, and other more durable, comfortable materials.
So, rather like us at The Old Surgery Dental Practice, we too utilise the best available dental technology and materials avilable.
Your Dentures questions answered
What are dentures?
These are often sets, rather than individual teeth, also known as removable prosthetic devices designed to replace missing teeth. They come in two types: full dentures for replacing all teeth in an arch and partial dentures for filling gaps between existing teeth.
How do dentures feel and function?
Initially, dentures may feel bulky or awkward as your mouth adjusts. Clients often think that the dentures are too big, or not fitting correctly when they first have them, but it's a case of getting used to wearing them and over a few days, they will feel natural and farmore comfortable. They improve chewing ability and speech, restore facial structure, and enhance smile aesthetics.
How should I care for my dentures?
Cleaning:
Brush dentures daily with a soft-bristled brush and non-abrasive cleaner.
Soaking: Store dentures in water or a denture cleaning solution overnight to keep them moist.
Handling:
Handle dentures carefully to avoid damage; never use hot water to clean or soak them.
Are there alternatives to dentures?
Yes, alternatives include dental implants for more permanent solutions or dental bridges for fixed replacements. Book a consultation with us and we'll be happy to discuss your requirements and which options are best suited for your needs.
